Have you noticed that menswear has become more and more predominant in the fashion world as well as everyday life in the past couple of years? Isn’t it magnificent?! No longer are men just throwing their clothes on in the morning and looking all sorts of sloppy and unkempt. No, no. Men are taking notice of all the great RTW and up and coming designers and are responding by more frequently playing with color, texture, form, and accoutrements. It’s definitely a more involved approach to getting dressed, but whether you blame the popularity of Mad Men or plain boredom- the times are a changing and men have once again begun caring about how something looks on them and searching for their style. They aren’t really talking about it, if you asked them what their style is they would probably look blankly at you and shrug. But quietly, they are working it out.

Don’t believe me. Just check out some of these GREAT San Francisco Menswear shops:

From art to fashion all throughout the past decades, the Vintage Fashion Expo comes to the Concourse on Brennan St. in San Francisco just twice a year – but it is well worth monopolizing those weekends of mine! Whenever I walk in I get a feeling of pure joy for knowing that I am about to see and touch are beautiful pieces of history. This event is almost like a trade show, with tons of booths from all over the U.S. (with a heavy California representation). Some of the vendors who showcase their items have their own storefronts and others sell online, however many only sell at expo’s like these so the selection is always spectacular!

This particular event, which is also held twice a year in Santa Monica, is all about fashion and jewelry and you can find nearly every decade of fashion and culture imaginable at this one event. And the one of a kind pieces I found were extraordinary. By the end I had bought a fabulous Kimono, an agate navajo ring, and an adorable cream summer sweater with metallic gold stripes. To Die For! For those of you who are obsessed with all things vintage, you need to check out the next event and get to know even more about the spectacular world of vintage clothing! Here is a little sneak peak at some of the great finds this Expo had, enjoy!

September 2011’s 7×7 cover story is the beautiful Maggie Rizer shot by Chad Riley- who I worked with on the underwater shoot in my portfolio. This issue includes 7×7’s annual Best-Dressed List, which includes: Maggie Rizer, Ken Fulk, Chloé Harris, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, Joe Haller & Ian Hannula, Simon Ungless, and Keylee Sanders. A fantastic list and a great inspirational issue! But what made me giggle with joy was to read Robin Rinaldi’s editor letter describing her fashion epiphany:

“People frequently say fashion is about self-expression… But I think it goes deeper than that. In a sped-up, often chotic world, fashion is, at its root, about a sense of self-control… Every choice you make while standing in front of your closet is a direct act of self-determination. Say you want to stay warm or cheer your self up with color. Perhaps you’re feeling a little insecure, but that bold belt always seems to up your confidence. Maybe it’s a day why you stimply need your favorite jeans, or you’re finally ready to don those earrings your ex gave you, which you dared not touch for six months. Our clothes communicate so much more about us that just our taste. What we value, where our boundaries are, and how we see ourselves with in the many social groups we inhabit – are just a few of the issues we address when we dress. Most comforting, at least to me, is that regardless of what’s happening out in the big, wide world, we can choose, every day, to create a small, personal universe of beauty and order that we wear up against our skin. That is by no means a superficial endeavor. It’s art.”

I couldn’t agree more! Which is why I love helping people in their wardrobes and closets.

Thank you Robin! Keep up the outstanding work at 7x7SF.

How can you leave the streets of San Francisco and quickly enter into a piece of Heaven?

My answer, a visit to Balenciaga and Spain at the De Young. In all honesty, there are no words to explain how visually exquisite this exhibition was.

My eyes couldn’t take in all the beauty. The integrated textiles, details, and fusion of intense design in which all these garments were created shows what an incredible genius Cristóbal Balenciaga was and still lives on in our everyday design esthetics.

Cristóbal was quite the jet-setter for those days and those long trips abroad offered him access to textiles and trades from India, Germany, and China by way of the Philippines. The inspiration lead to experimentation that brought together rich color, conscientious hand, and visual details to his creations.

There were many moments that I stood in complete awe of Balenciaga’s world and mind.

It’s incredible to imagine what more he could have done now that we have unlimited access to trades and textiles from around the world?

Q-Tips! Closet Consultations and Personal Shopping in SF

Book an Appointment with Q the Stylist

by Daily Candy- San Francisco

Your closet may not have skeletons, but it’s certainly hiding ghosts of outfits past.

Exorcise your wardrobe demons by booking a closet consultation with Katie Quinn (or Q the Stylist, as she’s known professionally).

Quinn attacks the task based on the client’s goals, whether you want more pulled-together work ensembles or need more out-on-the-town clothes. She edits your closet, creates ensembles from what’s left, and then (the fun part) pulls together a shopping list of needed updates.

Get a free sneak peek at her personal shopping prowess this Sunday at Laurel Heights’s new Luna boutique, where Quinn will be consulting with customers. Plus, everything in the shop will be 10 percent off, helping you shuttle in the outfits of the future.
Stop by Luna, 3615 Sacramento Street, at Locust Street (lunaboutiquesf.com), Sunday, noon-6 p.m., for free advice.

Last Wednesday I had the pleasure of meeting Martha Davis, a local shoe designer and try on/play with/covet all her delicious little gems from her 2010 Spring and Fall lines. Martha spent years in industrial design, and that understanding of foundation and support is felt when you wear one of her shoes. The cylindrical heel that she’s currently using in her lines had me wondering if I would be teetering slightly as I walked. But as I slipped on her buttery open-toed bootie my worries were voided. Not only could I slip this bootie on (no zippers required), but my foot was completely supported, and they were even super comfortable! Her designs are made in the same factory in Italy that Chloe and Chanel footwear is produced, so you know the leather is going to be the gold standard. But these are no sitting shoes, they are made for us pavement pounding urban dwellers. Gorgeous, luxe footwear that I don’t have to tote around in my purse and put on after I get somewhere??? Consider me converted!!

Also on the list titled “To Purchase Once I can pay my Rent” is Harputs newest design, amusingly nicknamed ‘the diaper.’ I don’t know if that’s actually what it’s called, but Martha is wearing it in the photo below with a short tuxedo jacket over it- so unfortunately, you can’t see it that well. But it is super flattering! I had it on most of the night over my clothes as kind of a dress. One reason I love going into Harputs is that they dress you up as soon as you walk in. (Yes please!) Anything Harputs designs is a trans-formative piece, that you can wear at least a few different ways. Their newest piece can be worn as a skirt, a dress, and a jumpsuit – for certain…I think. And can be casual or formal, but always dramatic yet easy. Love it! Check out their swacket too!! That’s a great piece!

People are always asking me questions- opinions and advice are wanted on wedding dresses, floor rugs, paint color for bathrooms, great jeans, lamps, a 12-year-old’s-first-dance-and-doesn’t-want-advice-from-mom, etc. They come in a variety of mediums: phone calls, email, text, gchats, facebook, in-person. But they almost always come in the same fashion: a frantic 911 style-emergency s-o-s.

Earlier this week, I was sent this question:

Any suggestions for cute family photo wear? We are getting our pictures taken outside and I’m having a difficult time dressing the family of little girls and my husband….

To which I answered:

Nothing says fun like family portrait time. Am I right? 🙂 To make it easier- I’d try prints for girls. There are so many lovely prints right now and nothing says Spring like soft floral print http://bit.ly/dp2a2K or a bright bold print, a la: http://bit.ly/9WvrbT . Once you have the girls figured out, build the other looks off of that. For you and dad- the idea is to be a coordinating foundation for the prints, but you- being the mom get to take it up a notch. Perhaps a dress with an understated ruffle or separates with sass (example: http://bit.ly/bZKE2x), think airy to channel Spring and add an accessory in a color from the print. And Dad is easy- get him in chinos and a shirt that coordinates with the color scheme.

Another strategy to make life easier, is to begin with the person that is the hardest to fit or is the most picky. (It would have been me in my family ;)…) Find something for them and then build the rest of the families looks around that.

Also, I adore stripes… CLASSIC! And an easy way to build coordinating looks for a family! Or do a la Modern Family and have your theme be all white and uber clean. 🙂

The East Bay

Express is throwing the biggest and baddest party in the East Bay on Friday, August 6 at Jack London Square and each week we’ll be featuring one of the bands you’ll get to experience from the main stage.

This week’s spotlight: Bang Data
Bay Area artists Bang Data bring you a mix of slick and melodic guitar, gritty synth & bass, over banging electro-acoustic rhythms – the perfect canvas for the bilingual rhymes and melodies of frontman Deuce Eclipse. Bang Data’s sound is a mash-up of styles combining hints of Latin, Reggae, Hip-Hop & Rock, which is nostalgic while offering a futuristic vision of Latin Alternative music.

The debut EP entitled Maldito Carnaval was released in 2009 and includes 7 songs that take you from a Samba-Ska-Cumbia and Electro-Bossanova to a Synth Bass Heavy Stooges infested beat.

Check them out and listen to songs at the Bang Data MySpace page. And check back here every week for a new band preview for the 2010 Best of the East Bay Party!

Did I mention the place was gorgeous? Below is a photo of Christina and me before the event.
