So where, you may wonder, is your summer look? Season’s Greetings! I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving Day weekend. I was lucky enough to have three Thanksgivings this year – one with my family in Chicago a week early and two in NYC. Though I can hardly believe another year is coming to a close, being so well-fed while huge snowflakes fall outside my window is definitely convincing me.

As many of you pointed out, it’s been a while since I sent out a newsletter. It’s been a pretty crazy year and my dedication to service always takes precedence over content. Plus, the Virgo in me doesn’t let me send out half-hearted newsletters. Only quality content here folks. So until I take my assistant’s advice and hire a team of content writers, newsletters will continue to take a back seat when things get wild. The silver lining from all of this was hearing how much you love and missed the newsletters!

This time last year, Lord & Taylor was closing their 5th Avenue location, this year we are saying goodbye to Barney’s on Madison Avenue. I am sad to see Barney’s go, but more surprised that they couldn’t come up with a better solution to keep the doors open. Over the years Barney’s kept up with the trends but not consumer habits. Meanwhile, across town both Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom opened up their first NYC stores. Neiman Marcus is taking a big bet on the locationally challenged Hudson Yards hoping the Instagram-worthy Vessel structure will lure tourists and their dollars to the store. Nordstrom took a more calculated approach, scouting real estate for 20 years before placing their mix of merchandise and renowned customer service near but not next to NYC’s other flagship department stores. The evolving world of retail and the consumer habits that drive it are so apparent in NYC, and while stores are doing their best to attract and maintain clientele, knowing what to buy remains the plight of the consumer.

But that’s where I come in. This year marks 10 YEARS IN BUSINESS for me! Did you know according to Forbes, only 1 out of 3 small businesses will last 10 years?! I’m practically speechless, but beyond grateful to all of you who have made this possible. From coast to coast to Chicago where it all started, thank you for supporting this small business and trusting me with your life, money, and dreams! You are all incredible people doing amazing things and I’m so happy I get to be a part of your journey. I’m honored and humbled everyday I get to spend time with you this way. I had some celebratory company swag made up and have been giving to clients as I see them, but let me know if you want one and haven’t received. The totes are the perfect size for shopping and, of course… returning.

I hope you have a beautiful and relaxing holiday season and wish you abundant health and happiness in 2020. Truly nothing else matters!

Budget Shopping Online: From A-Z

Dear Q the Stylist,

What stores do you recommend for a 30-something online-shopper on a budget? The older I get, the more I loathe shopping in stores (sad, I know). I have depended for years on Nordstrom.com (free shipping & returns make it so easy!) and Anthropologie.com, but lately both are disappointing me (Nordstrom’s quality seems to be going down, and Anthro is a bit too hippy for me lately and outrageously expensive for what you get)– any new suggestions?? I want to be trendy, but not break the bank, and ease of return is huge. How do I stay on fashion pointe without looking too young (20ish clothes) or too old (40ish)? Dressing as a stylish but not rich 30-something is increasingly hard!!! Would love to hear your suggestions!

Agreed! Keeping up with trends on a budget is difficult, but I’m here to help. Nordstrom and Anthropologie are great resources, however, there are many more options to find stylish, inexpensive pieces for your wardrobe.

Amazon

It’s not the first place you might think of, but Amazon is an up and comer for online shopping. It’s best if you know what you are looking for, as it is not conducive to browsing. For example a search for “Paige Hidden Hills Straight Jeans” yields more than result at a few different prices. Prime members receive free shipping and free returns. Another tip about Amazon is they offer great Contemporary jewelry pieces at lower prices than competing online retailers.

Asos

Asos.com leans more towards a younger age group, but good pieces can still be found for you. Check out jackets, skirts, and jeans on this site. Free shipping and free returns is offered.

Bloomingdale’s

Bloomingdale’s just added free shipping on online orders over $150 and free returns. The inventory is always filled with an assortment of brand names and sizes, and with over 100+ designers Bloomingdale’s will never disappoint you.

Madewell

Madewell is the sister site to J.Crew that is a little less expensive. Polka dots prints, stripes, colored jeans, blazers, and denim are popular items. The shoes are casual and made well (ha!). Free shipping is offered.

Piperlime (Gap Brands)

I rely on Piperlime for basic wardrobe updates for myself and clients. The site offers the latest merchandise from top lifestyle designers and highlights picks from Rachel Zoe, Aimee Song, and Olivia Palermo – all women with their finger on the pulse of fashion. The option to shop for the whole family with the latest men and kids apparel is available on Piperlime, and I will usually check out Gap and Banana Republic’s latest offerings while I’m at it. Their simple one “cart” checkout, along with free shipping and free returns on all orders makes transactions a breeze.

Zappos

I do recommend Zappos for a great selection of shoes. However like Amazon, it’s best to have an idea of what you are looking because a lot of time can be wasted navigating their options. Apparel and accessories have recently made there way onto the site, but it’s currently hit or miss. As always, free shipping and returns apply here.

Zara

Yes, this major European retailer has finally added online shopping! Zara offers more inexpensive modern and basic pieces that can be taken from day to evening wear. The prices are extremely reasonable for fashionable pieces that can be interchanged throughout your everyday wardrobe. Free shipping and free returns on all online orders.

I hope this guide helps you become more efficient online shopper. There are other sites I could talk to you about that have minimal shipping costs, but the sites listed above are my go-to’s that have the easiest shipping and returning with a comfortable range of price points.

Get the Look: Kourtney’s Statement Necklace

The saying “less is more” definitely holds true for accessorizing! This means you don’t have to spend more or wear more jewelry to update your look. A bold statement necklace is a small addition to your wardrobe that makes a big change in the tone of your look.

Take Kourtney Kardashian, for example. The Reality TV star isn’t only famed for her family’s zany dynamics, but for her impressive taste in fashion style as well. What I wore to an evening with Jean Paul Gaultier

Sidewalk to Catwalk

The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk at the De Young is an incredible exhibit of 140 haute couture and ready-to-wear peices, curated for the most part by the designer himself. The show has been the talk of the San Francisco art and fashion crowd for months and last night, ArtPoint held a gala in honor of Bastille Day. Cancan dancers entertained, artists sketched outfits, brie and champagne were served, and everyone toasted to the exhibit.

One of my favorite pieces from the exhibit.

In keeping with Gaultier’s gritty ballerinas and the overall Parisian Chic mood for the evening. I donned a floor length sequin backless dress, but made the look a bit moody with black leather accoutrements and minimal accessories.
